april showers bring may flowers!

funny thing, i was going to title this blog “rain rain go away,” but i already did that! well, i thoght it was funny at least. so i came up with another clever rhyme. all (not so much.) this is the second week in a row, that i have left school in utter disgust. so today, i found out this other super cool rule Buffalo State Collge has. Because when I graduated from ECC(as you all know now!) i transferred credits here. There is a limit on those credits and that limit is 66. (throwing that out there!) I have 64. Guess who can’t go to ECC this summer? ME :( so i enrolled at summer classes here. but, it is the price i have to pay if i want to graduate in december. so i will suck it up and deal with it. if there is something i have learned, never have a definite plan. have a general idea of things, cus for some reason, nothing ever turns out the way you plan it! and that way, if your plans do get broken, its a little easier to bend.
this blog lets me talk about this semester!!!!!!! and what a semester it has been. lots of ups and downs everywhere! basically now on the up and up. i have my hands full this semester with plenty of papers and projects. The class i find most intrigued to go to everday though, is my COM 450 class. I just enjoy the topics we discuss. It really makes you think, and im kinda big on that these days. i am also enjoying the book we have been reading all semester. the world is flat, by thomas friedman explores globalization, technologies, policies and economies and we are all connected a lot more than we think. this is probably one of the first books i have read cover to cover for a school project. (that sounds terrible, but my fellow students, you know it is true! most of you dont either!!!!) so if your looking for a cool, easy 572 page read, i reccomend this book to you. another class i took this semester was sports PR, now for a brief moment in time, i thought i wanted to get into sports pr, this class only steered me far away from it. i am much more of a spectator of sports. i dont really like to write about them. which by the way, me and my friends signed up to play softball for our favorite place! and if you know me, you where im talking about!!! (tuesdays this summer will be grand!) so, my com 410 class. this is where procrastination has gotten the best of me again. and joe, if you read this, im really sorry! my 15 page oral history final project, well, it is what it is. and ill leave it at that. i also ventured off and took some bussinesses (sp.?) classes this semester. my HR Management teacher is a bundle of energy. she really does a great job. her passion to teach is what keeps me interested, and the fact that she really took the time to get to know us. so, sue mcCartney, thanks for reinforcing why i picked buff state! and my marketing class, well….im really glad i am taking it pass/fail. i really felt that i should boycott buying a used book for 99$. so i didnt buy it. and i find myself tracing my hand in my notes. FYI: do not follow in my footsteps. valore.com all the way to buy my books next semester!!!!!!!!!!! with that being said, its a thursday night, and a new greys anatomy is on. being the female that i am, im going to go watch it now. (and then continue to write more papers…which i feel will never end. but it will!!!!!!!!!)

what a week….

in the recent light of the VT tragedy, i am just shocked really. and the media coverage is ridiculous. the questions they are asking these poor families and students are absurd. HOW DO YOU THINK THEY WERE FEELING?! come on. get the mic out of their face and let them cope and grieve. i really cant beleive how much one person can have to much hate and rage. and that no one picked up on those warning signs. (and the lack of communication!!!!!) my prayers go out for every one involved. it hits close to home too, seeing as i am a college student, those are my peers. i really am just shocked. its crazy.
FYI banner is much better than SABRE. just saying. i got to register and it seemed to go much smoother. but i got a bit of frustrating news when i met with our dept. chair today….apparently i dont have enough general ed. electives to graduate in december. so guess who gets to go back to ECC for summer classes….yes thats right…..ME. back to my alma mater. woopedy-doo. (not so much) but hey, if it gets me out when im supposed to, so be it. ill suck it up for a month. better than an extra semester. plus its ECC, and i miss it. hehe.
so back to the real focus for this blog. how i got to where i am today.
my second semester at buff state proved to be just as challenging. but i got so much out of it. except for my organizational communication class. i wont mention any names. my COM 308W class with Dr. Silverman again was a great learning experience. I got to work with Jericho Road Ministries and help them develop literature for their volunteers. My main focus was their women-mentoring-women program, or as we titled it, The Priscilla Project. This parntered women volunteers with incoming refugees and other women in need to help them manage the health care system, families and get their feet on the ground. This was such a great program to help rejuvenate the west side of Buffalo. I am very proud that I could be a part of it. It was how I was introduced to the Service-Learning program and how i started blogging! ta da! i was even fortunate enough to recieve an award for all my efforts last semester. I am very honored. still. Other classes I took were Group Process communication in which it was all group projects. think about it. how do you feel about group projects? My Desktop Graphics class introduced me to Mac Computers. Im a PC kinda gal, and that took a lot of getting used to, and im such an airhead when it comes to tech stuff anyways. but i did like the creative freedom that i got from that class. But still, the class i liked the most and passionately enjoyed was my PR writing class! and it really got me interested in community relations…..

we’re cup crazy!!!!!

April 12, 2007

well, its been a few weeks to say the least and i thoroughly enjoyed my spring break! my friends and i went to DC to see the sabres game! i have never been there before and i loved it! there is so much to see and i think every one needs to go and see it! we even got a tour of the west wing. i saw the oval office! and was in the rose garden. and lemme tell ya, it smells pretty nice in there! so much history and so much to learn! and its a fun town if you know what i mean! we really let people know how we do things in buffalo! and i am now getting ready to register for classes using banner. one last round at buff state for me! i hope banner is better than sabre…..ill have to let you know!
so. my first semester, academic wise, was kind of challenging. but i learned a lot. in my intro to PR and advertising class, i did an entire PR campaign for a fake “client.” i worked with my freind jess, and we did our project on PUSH buffalo. (people united for sustainable housing) great cause, great idea. the whole idea of this group is to make housing affordable for people on the west side and reinvest money and time into the community by using co-ops and clean-up efforts. PUSH will buy foreclosed houses and re-do them. they then want to resell them for a reasonable value so people can stay here, instead of leaving. the entire project was very time consuming, but i enjoyed it. i really found my niche. it got me excited that this is the kind of stuff the PR can do! another class i took that i found extremely challenging but very rewarding was COM 301 with dr. whitaker. he really pushes you to work hard in your papers and presentations, but i learned so much and really started paying attention to what was happening in the world. and i still do now. everyone really just needs to start thinking. ive said that before! now, this is no jab at the english dept. but my shakespeare class left a lot to be desired! and i also felt incredilbly dumb when my classmates would talk. i just wanted to read some plays. they were comparing shakespeare to marx and i really just wasnt making the connection. sorry! either way, the classes i took my first semester really pushed me to strive for success. and it gave the kick in the pants i needed to get motivated!!!!!

and for the record, tonight is the first night of the playoffs. GO SABRES!!!!!! ONLY 16 WINS TO GO!!!
