Three months ago I began working with The Morlock Foundation. An organization I knew nothing about. I was drawn to this organization due to the presentation Carmaletta Zandi, the executive director of The Morlock Foundation gave in our classroom.
When I first heard about the work which my class would be doing with an organization I felt overwhelmed. How could I help an organization with PR work when I was only beginning to learn about it myself? I soon shortly learned after that not only would I be helping The Morlock Foundation but I would be helping myself greatly as well.
Throughout the week in my classroom I would learn how to write something new things, such as a news release or a fact sheet. I would then have the opportunity to display what I had learned by writing a news release for The Morlock Foundation. This enabled me to work hands on with a real organization, writing real news releases.
Many students do not get an opportunity as easy as my class did. Most students have to prove they can take on working with an organization. I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity. Instead of proving myself to The Morlock Foundation before I began working for them I felt it was important to prove myself while working for them.
I don’t think I could have asked for a better organization to work with. Not only am I writing about issues which I am effected by, but I am happy to support. I was also lucky enough to work with Carmaletta Zandi. Carmaletta was very understanding about handing work in, responding to e-mails, any questions, and was always open to my ideas. Carmaletta was never negative which made my experience enjoyable.
One of the most rewarding experiences with The Morlock Foundation was being nominated as Community Heroes by Carmaletta. Attending a breakfast where I was amongst so many people who do good for our community was an extremely rewarding experience. The fact that a Carmaletta nominated us, when she really should have been nominated herself was a great honor.
It is obvious that my experience with service learning and The Morlock Foundation was a great experience. I believe that anyone who has the opportunity to work with an organization should. Not only will you learn a great deal about yourself but you will also learn experience which you will not find in the classroom.
I am proud of my portfolio thus far. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to complete everything which Carmaletta asked for throughout these months. However, Carmaletta has invited me back to volunteer for her in the fall. I am looking forward to perfecting my finished work and beginning new work.
All in all I’m so happy I was able to experience this because it is an experience I will always carry with me. I will carry this experience with me physically, by displaying my portfolio and mentally, with the experience I have gained, which I will use for the rest of my life.
