Internships

April 13, 2007

The summer has always been a time to relax, hang out with my friends and just do whatever I feel inclined do. Before school ended last year my father informed me that it was time for me to find a “real” job because he no longer wanted to support my relaxing lifestyle during the summer months. This was something I obviously did not want to hear, because I enjoyed my free time.
I decided it would be a great idea to get a job at one of my favorite clothing stores. The idea of discounts in my favorite clothing store sounded great. Soon after I returned home from college, I went for my interview. I was extremely nervous because this was my first real interview. The interview went well and I got the job.
My dream job turned out to be very disappointing. It was tiring to stand for 8 hours straight, helping nasty customers and barely making enough money to even wear all the nice clothes I was surrounded by. In addition, my boss was very strict and would watch us like a hawk.
This summer I decided it would be beneficial to apply for an internship. I need to get my feet wet and start to really think about what I want to do with the rest of my life. Hopefully, by getting an internship, I will begin to figure this out.
I never realized how difficult it would be to secure an internship. First, you have to write a resume and a cover letter. It has to be perfect because this is the first thing an organization or company will receive from you. After writing the resume you have to decide what areas or opportunities would provide the most experience in your field of choice. There were so many different things I found that I wanted to internship in, but most of them say that they are looking for one to two people This almost makes you lose hope because you realize how many people are applying for the same internship.
At this point, I have sent my resume to several organizations. I heard from one and have an interview set up for next week. I have my fingers crossed
