The Morlock Foundation: Final Reflection

Three months ago I began working with The Morlock Foundation. An organization I knew nothing about. I was drawn to this organization due to the presentation Carmaletta Zandi, the executive director of The Morlock Foundation gave in our classroom.
When I first heard about the work which my class would be doing with an organization I felt overwhelmed. How could I help an organization with PR work when I was only beginning to learn about it myself? I soon shortly learned after that not only would I be helping The Morlock Foundation but I would be helping myself greatly as well.
Throughout the week in my classroom I would learn how to write something new things, such as a news release or a fact sheet. I would then have the opportunity to display what I had learned by writing a news release for The Morlock Foundation. This enabled me to work hands on with a real organization, writing real news releases.
Many students do not get an opportunity as easy as my class did. Most students have to prove they can take on working with an organization. I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity. Instead of proving myself to The Morlock Foundation before I began working for them I felt it was important to prove myself while working for them.
I don’t think I could have asked for a better organization to work with. Not only am I writing about issues which I am effected by, but I am happy to support. I was also lucky enough to work with Carmaletta Zandi. Carmaletta was very understanding about handing work in, responding to e-mails, any questions, and was always open to my ideas. Carmaletta was never negative which made my experience enjoyable.
One of the most rewarding experiences with The Morlock Foundation was being nominated as Community Heroes by Carmaletta. Attending a breakfast where I was amongst so many people who do good for our community was an extremely rewarding experience. The fact that a Carmaletta nominated us, when she really should have been nominated herself was a great honor.
It is obvious that my experience with service learning and The Morlock Foundation was a great experience. I believe that anyone who has the opportunity to work with an organization should. Not only will you learn a great deal about yourself but you will also learn experience which you will not find in the classroom.
I am proud of my portfolio thus far. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to complete everything which Carmaletta asked for throughout these months. However, Carmaletta has invited me back to volunteer for her in the fall. I am looking forward to perfecting my finished work and beginning new work.
All in all I’m so happy I was able to experience this because it is an experience I will always carry with me. I will carry this experience with me physically, by displaying my portfolio and mentally, with the experience I have gained, which I will use for the rest of my life.

The End is Near- School is Almost Out!

There is only three weeks left until the end of the semester and from past experience I know these weeks will be filled with a lot of anticipation and anxiety. The anticipation of having three full months without school, teachers and school work will bring a smile to practically every student on campus. However, with this anticipation comes the anxiety of finishing all work on time. It is now time to study extra hard in order to maintain the grade you worked so hard for all semester, or studying so hard so that you just might bring that letter B to an A
I for one am feeling more anxiety than anticipation. With only three weeks left, I don’t know how I am going to finish all that needs to be completed. I’m not looking forward to the long nights which I will be spending in the library, the sleepless nights and the sleep deprived mornings that are heading my way.
In retrospect, I guess it will all pay off in the end when I finish my last exam and feel an enormous sense of relief. Let’s hope this sense of relief is partly because I did very well on my final exams.
It’s always weird when the semester is over. When I look back to August it also seems like such a long time ago, but when I think of what I’m doing right now I feel like it’s gone by so fast. The end of a school year is another end to a chapter in my life. So far this chapter has very been positive. I’ve learned several new things and over came many obstacles from different experiences which I went through in the past.

Internships

The summer has always been a time to relax, hang out with my friends and just do whatever I feel inclined do. Before school ended last year my father informed me that it was time for me to find a “real” job because he no longer wanted to support my relaxing lifestyle during the summer months. This was something I obviously did not want to hear, because I enjoyed my free time.
I decided it would be a great idea to get a job at one of my favorite clothing stores. The idea of discounts in my favorite clothing store sounded great. Soon after I returned home from college, I went for my interview. I was extremely nervous because this was my first real interview. The interview went well and I got the job.
My dream job turned out to be very disappointing. It was tiring to stand for 8 hours straight, helping nasty customers and barely making enough money to even wear all the nice clothes I was surrounded by. In addition, my boss was very strict and would watch us like a hawk.
This summer I decided it would be beneficial to apply for an internship. I need to get my feet wet and start to really think about what I want to do with the rest of my life. Hopefully, by getting an internship, I will begin to figure this out.
I never realized how difficult it would be to secure an internship. First, you have to write a resume and a cover letter. It has to be perfect because this is the first thing an organization or company will receive from you. After writing the resume you have to decide what areas or opportunities would provide the most experience in your field of choice. There were so many different things I found that I wanted to internship in, but most of them say that they are looking for one to two people This almost makes you lose hope because you realize how many people are applying for the same internship.
At this point, I have sent my resume to several organizations. I heard from one and have an interview set up for next week. I have my fingers crossed

A New Hope

Since there is approximately one month left in the semester, I felt it was important to meet with The Morlock Foundation before spring break. On Wednesday March 27, I met with Carmaletta to over important details.
At first, I was a little hesitant to have this meeting. I was concerned that Carmaletta, the Executive Director of The Morlock Foundation, expectations were not being met. However, when we all met, everyone was very excited, which relieved me of any anxious feelings.
The main purpose of having this meeting was for me to ask Carmaletta exactly what she wanted us to produce and specifically what she wanted it to be about. In addition, we requested that she be more specific regarding her needs about this project. For about one hour we discussed several programs in which The Morlock Foundation is involved, and what Carmaletta wanted us to report on about each individual program. This was extremely helpful for me in terms of what Caramletta expected. The information provided me with a detailed understanding of my responsibilities.
The meeting generated another boost of energy and inspiration. What was even more encouraging was Carmaletta’s desire to have us return next year to continue our work. I was very appreciative of Carmaletta’s support, which ultimately reinforced our positive feelings about the work we had done for this important organization. I left feeling very encouraged and gratified. My hope is that we will be able to spend more time in the future with Carmaletta and her staff, which would allow me to continue providing a valuable contribution to her organization.

A Work in Progress

I have been working with the The Morlock Foundation for about one month.
The communication thus far has been positive. We are able to communicate through e-mail in a timely and effective manner. However, there are instances where the information lacks specificity. Since I don't meet with The Morlock Foundation on a regular basis, it is important that I clearly communicate through e-mail in order to do our job properly and meet expectations. Since we have only met once it is difficult to grasp all of Carmaletta's needs. While e-mailing is a good tool, sometimes to face communication is what we really need.
We have scheduled a meeting for April 11th. This will give me an opportunity to
Submit some of the work and raise any concerns that I have. Hopefully, the meeting will help everyone and meet everyone’s expectations.
I am very excited about the opportunity to work with this organization. The
Morlock Foundation has inspired me to consider the future. As a second semester junior, I feel that this is an appropriate time to begin thinking about my future goals. The foundation has provided me with an opportunity to examine what my interest and goals truly are.

An Introduction to Service-Learning!

The Morlock Foundation

The Morlock Foundation was inspired by a miracle child by the name of Donovan who required three heart surgeries to survive. These procedures were going to be expensive and pose a difficult financial impact on the family. Donovan’s mother, Carmaletta Zandi, understood that other families identified with her suffering and financial dilemma. She decided that something had to be done.
The mission of the Morlock Foundation is to “help families receive resources, support, love, hope, education, respect, healthcare, respite, and other services needed to strengthen families and educate the community”. On Wednesday, February 14, 2007 Meg O’Dwyer and I were able to meet with Carmaletta Zandi, who founded this organization.
The organization is located in an old building in downtown Buffalo. We met upstairs in a small board room. Caramaletta was very relaxed and began to tell us a little bit about herself. We discussed our reasons for choosing this organization. After we became familiar with Carmaletta and her organization, she discussed her expectations for the following semester. Most of the work was similar to the work we would be doing in COM 308. However, she had some additional projects for us work on together. One of the projects which interested me greatly was redoing the volunteer packs which they distribute to people who are interested in gaining more information about the volunteer services which the organization offers. Carmaletta expressed a desire to reach out and appeal to younger or a more collegiate population. The project has inspired and motivated me. I have a working knowledge about young people’s ideas which could ultimately help to attract interest in this important organization.
What I liked the best about Carmaletta and the Morlock Foundation is that they are very flexible and personable. Caramaletta was interested in developing a plan around our schedule and was open to our ideas. The only difficulty I foresee is transportation to and from the Morlock Foundation. However, Caramaletta suggested that we communicate through email which would ease many of our concerns.
This will be a great learning experience because I am excited about working with an organization that has a positive impact on the Buffalo community. I am looking forward to making a difference in people’s lives. I believe my participation in the Morlock Foundation will help to further their mission and principles. I am hopeful that my participation will provide an opportunity to assist in the day to day operation and at the same time, help to encourage others to participate in this wonderful organization. I hope that by the end of the semester I will have made a difference in the Morlock Foundation.

and then there was one....

here i am with one day left of the semester......

and i'm so glad its over! the past few days have been pretty busy....
last week i was very honored to recieve an award for all my work this semester. I was awarded Outstanding Student Community Service in a Service- Learning Course of 15 hours a week or more. It was a really great way to cap off the semester. And I am very thankful to be recognized.

My brochure for The Priscilla Project came in very useful for Jericho Road Ministries. Matt used it in meeting that helped them acquire a grant to get the project rolling! They liked my idea and the approach that I took! That is a huge accomplishment, and I'm really glad I was a part of it!

Tommorow is a fun-filled day.

And i hope u can pick up on my sarcasm here. I have my ANT 101 exam tommorow. Note to self: i should have bought the book this semester. woopsies. I also have my final presentation tommorow for COM 307. and we have to be videotaped, and i'm trying to figure out what to wear. i sound like such an airhead. but i really don;t want to wear heels all day trucking around on campus. cus really, i would wear sweatpants everyday if i could. and really, in the summertime, im lucky if i have shoes on. wow, who sounds like a dirty hippie right now? ME. and i'd rather be comfy walking the 1000000000000000000 miles it takes me to get from car in the parking lot to lets say, ummmmm ketchum hall. with the wind blowing in my face, and it being roughly 10 degrees colder on campus then in depew. that's a typical morning at buff state!

tommorow evening will be a celebration as far as i'm concerned! but not too big, because i'm saving all my energy for the best day of the year. (saturday, december 16th) in case you were wondering. it's my birthday and i'll be painting the town my favorite color. ha!

check this out......this is so random!

thats a lot of vegetables......

christmas time is here, and i can't wait to actually enjoy the season! this is the first xmas is 5 years that i haven't been working at old navy, and i actually have a life. i made cookies with my cousin this weekend, and if you know us, you know we don't cook, or bake for that matter. but they came out delicious, and my shrinking grandmother (i think) will actually eat them this year! and i have to start shopping.......

Reflection Paper #3

This semester has brought on a lot of work, but I think it has really paid off in the end. I now I have a full portfolio that I can actually use in a real life situation. I enjoyed this project because it gave me the hands-on experience that I need for when I graduate.

I didn’t encounter any problems with Jericho Road Ministries. Matt was nothing but nice and gave constructive feedback on my work. He was flexible with my schedule and vice versa. I really like how the brochure turned out.

I didn’t realize the amount of writing that is involved in day-to-day activities, or how much PR practitioners really do write for an organization. It is a lot. But I enjoyed it. One thing I do not like, are formal planning sheets. I think they are really annoying. I would rather jot some things down on paper and work from that.

I am very pleased with how everything turned out this semester! I even received an award for all my hard work. I am very honored to be nominated and recognized. I really appreciate it.

I think more classes should do hands on projects like service learning. It gives students a chance to take what they have learned and give back to the community. It is a good way to gain experience and build a resume. Because I know, I need to build mine up some more!

I really can’t complain about this project. I was also very fortunate that I had a community partner that was easy to contact. I know some of the students in class felt like they were hassling their contact, or that their contact didn’t provide enough information. Matt and Jericho Road Ministries was the total opposite. We remained in contact throughout the semester and I went there I think 3 or 4 times. If I needed information I knew where to find it.

This class there was a lot of work involved, but because it was broken down accordingly, it wasn’t overbearing. It felt it was very manageable. I guess I am just rambling now, but everything this semester went very smooth for me! It was a great learning experience! I guess it’s a good thing I never did get in touch with PUSH Buffalo…..

back to grind....kind of....

November 30, 2006

I hope every one had a nice Turkey Day! If i didnt eat again for about a week, I think i would be all set. really. Going to Texas this year to visit my family, also kept me out of trouble this past Thanksgiving Eve! ha.

It was really nice seeing my family though. My youngest brother is such a firecracker. He's the funniest 6 year old i've ever met. he wants a gorilla for christmas. He tried to moon my Mom. No joke. But when I got back in Tuesday night, it was back the grind. Well, I went out on Tuesday with my freinds, so really the grind became Wednesday morning.

I was up until 4AM. I am currently running on three hours of sleep. I was finishing my final portfolio for my COM 308 class. This is what I get for procrastinating! I dont think I will ever learn! However, I presented all of my materials to Matt and the rest of my class this morning! Everything went extremely well! And he told me they used my brochure again at another meeting for Grant Funding for The Priscilla Project! It was recieved very well, and the organization really likes the final product. It's a good feeling!

Speaking of good feelings, I was also nominated for my work this semester for my Service Learning Project! I am extremely honored and it was a nice surprise to end the semester! So that luncheon is on Tuesday @ the Burchfield-Penney Art Gallery! My old man is so proud! hehehe (And I have another date with Tom, even better!)

There are officially 3 days of school left. This is a fantastic feeling! Im going to buckle down this weekend (I swear) and write my papers. I really mean it. By the way, if you have never read The Onion, you should really check it out. This is a fine peice of Journalism meat.

it's almost turkey time!

November 16, 2006

I’m just throwing it out there that there is exactly one month until my 21st birthday. I think that is a good way to start this blog. So I’m counting down the days…..That also means there is one month left in the semester too! And I really have my work cut out for me.

I have to start making revisions for my final portfolio for COM 308. I keep a copy, and Jericho Road Ministries also receives a copy. Along with that means I have to redo my resume, because that is part of my portfolio too. I haven’t updated that since my sophomore year of college back at ECC. So there are some definite changes! I have a paper to start writing for COM 307, and another for COM 408. FUN. I think there is more, but I can’t think of what is right now.

I am still working on the new layout for the brochure. I hope to have it done by this weekend. Because it is going to be a 4-fold instead of a 3-fold, the entire layout has changed. I has left me with a lot more room to work with. I haven’t been to Jericho Road Ministries in a while, but I have been keeping email contact with Matt.

Thanksgiving is coming up! This year, I am going to Texas. My mom, stepdad and other brother and sister live down there. As well as some Aunts and Uncles and cousins. So I am looking forward to seeing everyone, and being able to go swimming! Its still warm in Dallas where the rest of my family lives! Unlike here, but that’s just Buffalo. Oh, and by the way, it is raining today. Why? Because it’s Thursday. So, like the rest of America, I will have to arrive at the airport about 3 hours before my flight leaves, and stand in line for security checks. (People are going to be cranky too) And take off my shoes. I wonder if I am allowed to bring a water bottle this time around? Because when I went in August, that was not allowed. Really, what has this world come to? There’s so much hate. It’s ridiculous, and kind of sad. Maybe with the recent elections, some changes will come around. I hope everyone went out there and voted! (That was my semi-political rant for today)

Well, I have some research to do. For the final project in Bryski’s class, we are to do a Standard Agenda Presentation. Our group is researching pollution on and around campus. The causes and ways to prevent it. I think it’s a pretty good idea, and it affects everyone.

Until next time……

HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

good day sunshine....

I think today is the first Thursday of the semester where it has not rained, snowed, sleeted etc. My fellow classmates and I have come to the conclusion that every Tuesday and Thursday, (which also happen to be the days I come to school) some kind of precipitation falls. And today is surprisingly sunny and warm, and its noon! And I left my umbrella in the car today….so hopefully I won’t need it later.

The semester is starting to wind down, and I am really looking forward to a much needed semester break! I registered for classes next semester, and I have another full course load! Only two left! And of course when I go to register (at 1am, ahem) SABRE won’t even load onto my computer because the server is so jammed. So ask me when I finally was able to log on. Well let me tell you, it was 4AM. That’s right, I was so aggravated I just went to bed and set my alarm. I got all the classes I wanted, however, one class in particular, which shall remain nameless, was full before I was even able to register, leaving me to take it with the alternative professor. I hope you can sense the joy I am feeling about that. Ha.

Anywho, back to my Service Learning Project. I received a really nice email from Matt Tice @ Jericho Road Ministries thanking me for all my effort this semester. It also had a suggestion about how I worded a sentence or two. And his suggestion makes the information flow much more smoothly (does that sound right?) I think you get the hint. I am also going to change the brochure from a 3 fold design to a 4-fold. That way, it will have a tear-off portion for potential volunteers to send us their information. Also, this way, I can add more pictures to the brochure. I think this is going to look really nice when it’s all done. After I get that finished, I have to start revising my portfolio for my COM308 class. Because I am pretty sure that Jericho Road Ministries is getting a copy of that as well. I have to find all my papers, and I’m really hoping that I saved everything, so I can just revise it on my computer. But, knowing me, I probably didn’t. I didn’t start doing that until a few weeks ago. Fantastic! Ha.

Our first volunteer also went through her Introductory Orientation. Laura is now waiting to see who she will be mentoring! WOOHOO! It’s neat to see this plan take action! So far, everything is running smoothly over there! I can’t really complain.

Well, I’ve gotta run to a PRSSA meeting now. Until next time…..

the countdown is on!

What a week this has been! I have been super busy with school this week. Only 1 month and 16 days until the last day of the semester! (but I’m not counting or anything)

I met with Matt and Elaine this week at Jericho Road and Journey’s End to present my brochure. I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure if they would like it….and they did! They were very impressed, which is awesome! And I know that Matt was going to use it today in meeting with health care providers for The Priscilla Project. Its really neat to know what you did is actually going to be used in the real world.

So now that the first draft of the brochure for the volunteers is done, I am going to add some pics of real women that the program will help. I think this is a really great program because proper healthcare is so important for any woman or child. This program will benefit the community greatly, because JRM provides affordable healthcare through the Family Practice that is attached. Then, these women can take what they know, and pass it on to their children and future generations. And the end result would be healthy, happy families.

One afternoon that I was there, the waiting room for the Family Practice was packed. Each person was different, and from different cultures. These two organizations have helped so many people. It really is amazing.
I haven’t met any of the women that will be the mentees in the program. However, I do know that Elaine from JERS has three women in mind. These women come from Cuban, Sudan, and Africa. I am very excited to know that I was a part of this! And what is even more exciting is that we have our first volunteer! Laura from the Career Development Center has volunteered to become a mentor! So hopefully with this brochure, we can get many more to volunteer. There is also a panel discussion next Thursday, November 9th, at the Karpelles Manuscript Library Museum on Porter Ave. The discussion should be pretty interesting because the topic is the Plight of Refugee Women and Children. This is exactly who these organizations reach out to. I think I might go as long as I don’t have to work.

I am really looking forward to this weekend. As I do every weekend, because it means I don’t have to wake up early! I am not a morning person by any means. And I have a date on Friday! So I’m excited for that too! With that being said, I have to get ready for work. It should be another exciting day at Wegmans……

Reflection Paper #2

It took me a little while this semester to get started with a client, but once I did, I really got the ball rolling. I am currently writing for Jericho Road Ministries, in particular, The Priscilla Project. I have met with Matt Tice several times so far. And each meeting has been beneficial to the both of us. I am doing the writing that will be sent out to volunteers for The Priscilla Project. So my key public is mature, nurturing women. They are most likely middle-aged with families of their own. We are going to eventually send the brochure that I have been working on to local Women’s Bible Study groups and churches.

I have met with Elaine Smyth-Bogumil as well. I really appreciated her input for the brochure, because the volunteers will be in direct contact with her for their orientations. She also asked me to give her an example of a news release so that she can use for JERS. Which reminds that I should do that. My experience so far has been positive. Because Matt isn’t all that familiar with PR, he let me really use what I have learned and my creativity for the project. This was good because I was not sure what he was expecting. And he is very easy to work with and appreciates my time and effort in the project.

I have learned that a lot goes into PR writing. I spend a lot of time staring at my computer screen until I finish brainstorming what I want to say on paper. Sometimes it is frustrating, but I think I am getting better. Hopefully that shows in my writing.

I really do like the idea of Service Learning because this is what I will actually be doing when I graduate. I will retain so much more of this, rather than sitting in a class and listening to theories. I’m really glad I can take what I have learned and put it to good use already.

This project has also allowed me another opportunity to better my writing. I am currently blogging for the Career Development Center. They have set up a blog for the VSL project. I think that are actually going to get it up and running this week! So far, so good.

proud member of the procrastination nation

October 23, 2006

This week I really have my work cut out for me. I have to start to organize my layout for my brochure for The Priscilla Project, because I meet with Elaine and Matt next week. My panel discussion for COM 308 is on Thursday, and I have to start writing a paper for COM 408. Oh yeah, and I have to study for my ANT 101 exam which is tomorrow. On top of all that, work has been super crazy! If I have to develop one more picture of the “October Surprise,” I might scream. However, seeing all of the devastation in the photos makes me realize how lucky we were.

So far for my brochure, I have started to write down the content that will go inside the brochure. I am trying to make it the most informative and appealing to my key public. In case you were wondering what a key public is, it’s a group of people you are trying to reach with your message. My key public for this brochure is middle-aged women, who are nurturing, dedicated and patient. These will be the mentors to the women in this project. My brochure will be a 4-page foldout. Well, that’s the plan, lets see if I can get it to work on a computer screen! Like I said, that is the hard part. I am currently waiting for Matt to send me pictures to include in the brochure too.

Another big win for the Sabres tonight! We are on fire this season! I am going to try and get an internship with them hopefully next semester or in the summer. My manager at Wegman’s used to do Community Relations for them, so he said he would help try to set something up. So I’m hoping that works out…..

As I procrastinate on doing my homework some more, I might as well keep blogging! If I had a dollar for every time I did this, I would be one rich lady. One of my worst habits is definitely procrastination. I need to work on that. But I feel it’s a problem a lot of college students have. So at least its not just me.

I
’m really looking forward to this weekend. It’s Halloween weekend, and there are plenty of parties going on, and one of my friends turns 21! It’s shaping up to be a pretty good weekend, and the Bills have a bye week, so we don’t have to watch them lose again either!

Well, I think I’m going to get back to my homework. Or I’ll just be on myspace…….try and find me!

October 17, 2006

Well, I’m a little new at this, considering this is my first blog. EVER.

So the purpose of my blog is to give the students and faculty a peek at what it’s like to be not only a student here, but what it’s like to be a part of the service- learning program with the Career Development Center. The purpose of the program is to take the skills I have learned at school and use them in the community. I think it’s a really great idea, and I’m happy to be a part of it! The community organization I am working for is Jericho Road Ministries. They are located on Barton St. on the West side. Their organization provides faith-based healthcare and other services for the community and they work hand-in-hand with Journey’s End Refugee Services . So they also provide healthcare and other social services for the incoming refugees. You should check out their website httphttp://www.jrm-buffalo.org/ !! So this semester, I am actually doing Public Relations writing for them. They have created a new program there, “The Priscilla Project.” This is a program where volunteer women, will mentor medically at-risk women. The “at-risk women” are self-identified women of poverty, all refugee women as well as those with medical needs such as malnutrition, diabetes, unplanned pregnancy, anemia and many others. Social factors such as housing, transportation, and improper food storage can increase the level of risk. Women have been seen as “gatekeepers” to family health, and this program bases its foundation on just that. The impact this program will have is a trickle-down effect and will reach out to their children and future generations.

I actually took that from the brochure that I am currently working on for the program. The brochure will be used to canvas for volunteer women to be mentors. This brochure should be interesting to make! I am very new at this, and am not a very tech-savvy. So I have a feeling I might sit in front of the computer very frustrated for a decent amount of time! But this is something I have to learn, and I want this brochure to turn out really nice, because I really support this cause!
I also have been a bit set back by this ridiculous storm that hit on Friday! Friday the 13th! That was absolutely crazy! I am very fortunate that I have power and heat in my house! Because some of my friends still don’t! And the roads flooded, and two cars were actually underwater! And someone please tell me why Buff State was the only college open on Monday?! We were still in a state of emergency! But that was my little rant about that. That and I just wish it would stop raining! That’s all for now!
