Embarking on a refresh for the college site sounds daunting, even to me. But it’s not really that crazy of a thing, this refresh. It’s like going out and getting some new accessories for your little black dress. It’s still the same old reliable, but with a new twist that makes you say, “hmmm, let me take another look at this”.

As a designer, the creative process is a very personal journey, wrought with the ups and downs of expectations and excitement. I anguish over every little detail, doubting myself at every turn, asking questions, researching, designing iterations, until at last, the pieces click and there’s that “Aha!” moment.

Working with information architecture is a very humbling experience. As a designer, it’s my job to to combine the “how cool is that?” thoughts with the “will users be able to find this? Is this in the right place?” thoughts (it’s going to be a good thing—just keep breathing). It always turns out to be a good thing, although it may take some twists and turns to get there. It’s actually cool to remember that’s what we’re all about and when it works well, it’s great. Being a part of this process and seeing all our pieces and parts come together into a site makes my knee socks go up and down. It’s a really cool ride, even if I have to hold my breath sometimes.
