M by Madonna

One of my favorite fashion icons is at it again. This time the Material Girl is re-inventing herself yet again, but for clothing giant, H&M. The new M by Madonna line which many of you have probably already seen the generous spread in all of the popular fashion magazines, is set to launch March 22nd. The clothing line features a white trench coat, which can be seen on Madonna in the ads retailing for $99.90, several cute V-neck, dresses in Black and a gorgeous Missoni-esqe silk dress with Kimono sleeves. However, the line still offers a punch for those of you who don’t prefer dresses; she has included a black military looking tracksuit as well as a leather jacket for $198.00. Many of the items seem overpriced, but hey they are designed by the Material Girl herself. I like that this caters to the wide variety of her fans, the one that respects the dual personality of such the old Hollywood glam and the Punk Rock side. However I would like to ask all of my readers a question-Are clothing lines celebrities create in conjunction with a clothing store successful? My answer is not always. Many times, which I believe will happen with the M by Madonna line will be too costly for the H&M consumer. H&M is a great store for basics and picking up a quick outfit to wear on a date or out with friends, but as far as investment dressing, try somewhere else as the quality is just not there for the 9-5 workweek. I think the H&M customers who will buy the M by Madonna line are the ones that have no problem spending money on higher priced clothing at H&M. Another store that has tested out the same idea is Target. Target’s Go International campaigns give consumers like me and you the opportunity to own a designer piece at a much more affordable price. Currently featured in the stores is the beachy but cute Proenza Schouler line including a silk teal bustier, one of their signature styles, chain-linked prints, safari-inspired jackets, wrap dresses, old-school inspired sweatshirts, and a oh so soft gray suede jacket. The nice thing about this line is the fact that a typical dress can range from $25-$39.99 where the real piece can range in the thousands. This way the designer gets more exposure and his/her work out the American public while still offering luxury to the everyday consumer. I think all in all the Go International lines at Target have been successful and I hope Target will continue to bring in new faces, ideas and concepts to the American marketplace. I would like to know what all of my readers think. Is creating a clothing line a way for celebrities to get richer or do you think it is a good way for the American consumer to score a great designer piece for a whole lot less?
