Misty Harris, Class of 2007

My name is Misty, and I’m a senior in Fashion and Textile Technology. I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. I previously attended the University at Buffalo where I received a bachelor of arts in Political Science, May 2000. I recently decided to return to school for fashion after working in Public Radio Broadcasting in Buffalo and New York City. My story is a bit complicated due to the fact that I am a Merchie, but my goal is to do fashion journalism. I’ve completed internships at Seventeen Magazine, Buffalo Rising, and Rochester Insider. Since there isn’t a concentration for fashion journalism, I decided to focus my efforts on merchandising. I’m also interested in Visual Merchandising and Fashion Styling. I look forward to interacting with my fellow fashion fanatics!

The Elongated Cardis

When you know its warm outside, but you know you’ll be running errands where it might be cool, like the grocery store for example, what would you grab to wear? The elongated cardis is the perfect answer to this little problem. They’re light-weight and give off a very relaxed and non-chalant vibe. Celebrities all over the Los Angeles area can be seen sporting these super trendy covers.

Eight, Eight, OH-Eight!

The summer Olympics are about to begin on 8-8-08 in Bejing and just like every Olympics, the whole world is sure to be watching the coverage. Everyone is usually so in-tuned to the athletes and who’s managed to take home the gold. This year though, designers everywhere are scrambling to get their designs coverage. American sportswear brand, Ports 1961 has secured the corespondents on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, and the USA Network to wear their designs while cover the Bejing Olympics.

“When I was first approached to create a capsule collection for the NBC Olympic Commentators, I was honored,” said Tia Cibani, Creative Director of Ports 1961. “I can relate to their hectic work schedule and the necessity to have to have easy, modern, and accessible clothing that travels well. I took into consideration each woman’s personal sense of style and fused it with the classic Ports 1961 sensibility.”

Peace Love & Happiness

I’ve started to notice an ongoing trend in the fashion industry. Since the “Go Green” movement was introduced, more and more retailers and jewelry designers have decided to re-introduce the “peace” symbol that was one very popular in the 60’s and 70’s. This new fad has taken the market by storm and everywhere you look, there’s sure to be something with the poluar “peace” symbol.

Here’s a few I managed to find:

Get the Look- Gossip Girl Style

It all started out as a series of books about wealthy high school students living on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

But then, last fall, the CW television network premiered the Gossip Girl show, which turned out remarkable ratings. Over night, this show became an instant hit. Viewers loved tuning in once a week to catch up on the social lives of queen bee Blair Waldorf, her best friend, Serena VanDerWoodsen, and all their friendshups in between.

Aside from the “good tv” aspect of the show, audiences get a glimspe of that “New-York-Style-Fashion” everyone constantly raves about. If you’re not from Manhattan, and you’re not exactly familiar with its’ fashion scene, then this show gives those viewers who may not have been old enough to tune into Sex and the City, a closer look at the envious fashions of the New York City elite.

Bag Borrow or Steal Your Very Own Piece of Sex and the City!

I know I’ve done a few entries on Sex and the City and while this is a fictional show and major box office hit, there’s nothing fictional about the amazing fashion that is featured. Throughtout the Sex and the City movie, Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant, played by Jennifer Hudson, is shown carrying a variety of designer purses. These purses, as she so proudly declared, were items that were borrowed off the infamou website Bag Borrow or Steal.

After doing a little research of my own, I got the scoop on this up and coming website made famous by Sex and the City. For a decent start up fee, a member of Bag Borrow or Steal can begin browsing the website that offers everything from jewelry, sunglasses and of course the coveted designer bags. After perusing each category, you may find something that you may want to “Borrow”. For a small fee, you can then rent the item for a week or for a month, whichever pleases you. If after a week, you decide you can’t live without your new found treasure, Bag Borrow or Steal offers an opportunity to “Steal” the item, for a fee of course :-)

I found this site incredibly interesting. While I don’t think it would be financially do-able every week, I do find that “Borrowing” real Chanel earings or a vintage Gucci necklace for an occasion such as your own Wedding, would be an unbelievable opportunity.

Check out a few of my finds :-)

Remember that cute little cupcake purse Charlotte’s daughter Lilly carried to Carrie’s wedding? Well here it is to borrow!
