Now You Know

I love this man.
Memsor Kamarake is the Fashion Director & Stylist of VIBE magazine.
I love the fact that he brings a new fashion effect to the magazine. Something that guys can use for inspiration to get their swag in full effect. My favorite fashion spread in VIBE history was from the May 2008: The layout featured people who worked in the fashion industry; from the PR of Louis Vuitton to the Director of Marketing of LRG. Memsor brings high fashion to VIBE but still makes it relatable to those in the hip-hop arena. Check out the current issue of VIBE. Memsor brings us back to the times of the Civil Rights movement. He captured the classic style as well as the spirit of family, hardwork all done with a touch of grace and sophistication.

Yes we can!

Softwear!

So, just about everyone has a clothing line nowadays and that includes Microsoft! Yup, Microsoft —- the company best known for Windows and Microsoft Office—- has a clothing line. Microsoft and Common have joined forces to create the retro-styled uber-hipster clothing line, “Softwear by Microsoft” which is expected to hit select stores on Dec. 15

Microsoft says it’s a “clothing line that taps the nostalgia of when PCs were just starting to change our lives,” and that it aims to “showcase the DOS days of the software company that now connects over a billion people.” What’s next for this software giant? No. Seriously… what’s next? Linens? Perfume? Despite all the sarcasm, the shirts look cool.

There is still hope for us fashion students

So I found the best article for my last blog. It is about how fashion students should stay focused and take risks even with the rocky economy! It requires focus, creativity and communication with the customer. There was an event hosted by the YMA Scholarship Fund and sponsored by DOW XLA on December 2 where several famous fashion-people spoke.
Moderating the discussion the direction of fashion in the changing economy was Tim Gunn who asked questions to panelists that included designer Zac Posen; Les Steiger, senior vice president of men’s at Macy’s Central; Alex Gonzalez, principal and creative director of AR New York; Mary Alice Stephenson, style expert and contributing fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar; Mindy Grossman, chief executive officer of HSN, Inc. and Josh Button, model and menswear fashion consultant.

Everyone was mainly optomistic, given the current shaky climate, and said instead it is an opportunity for companies to re-focus the essentials of their brands.

“Define and redefine your look,” said Posen, whose mentor, the late Hal Ruttenstein, had also advised him. “Create your own look, and know who you are and know who the customer is.” But, he added, “There’s no formula.”

“Communicate your truth to a wide audience,” said Alex Gonzalez, who founded his own advertising agency ,”but don’t speak to the lowest common denominator to survive. Hold to the truth.”

Mindy Grossman of HSN, Inc., said that brands that can tell a story and connect on a deeper level with their customers will survive.

“We offer great stories and great storytelling, and we understand what our customer is thinking and feeling,” she said of her popular shopping channel. “There’s never any bad news on HSN,” she joked. “If you’re tired of watching CNN, watch HSN!” She also said that the products you sell have to be unique or special, something that “you can’t get anywhere else, but is accessible.”

Les Steiger, who said that at Macy’s they add 20 new brands each year to their stable, said that it’s harder to launch a full collection initially, so “find a niche, whether it’s shoes or it’s t-shirts,” he said.

Mary Alice Stephenson pointed to the internet as a tool enabling brands to have more of an emotional connect with their audiences - now, even luxury brands selling $100,000 diamonds have original content on the Web.

“Fashion has to be inspirational,” she said. “Luxury brands have to communicate what buying their product makes you feel on the inside and how good it makes you feel.”

Still, the rules for luxury brands have changed, the panelists agreed, but that doesn’t mean designers or companies shouldn’t take risks.

“Everyone I know is cutting back in some way,” said Steiger. “We’re competing for that discretionary dollar. But in fashion, we need continued innovation.”

FFFashion!!

gI_0_FoxLightWname2Color2E.jpg

Born Free USA, Animal Protection Institute and Emagazine have teamed up and came up with a great idea.: FFFashion! It is a fur-free fashion design competition. The point is to promote the ethical and environmental benefits of not using fur while giving independent designers an opportunity to showcase their talent for a worthy cause. There will be several green-celebrities that do the judging such as Summer Rayne Oakes, Sophie Uliano and Brita Belli. This sounds so exciting and I can’t wait to see/hear more about it! I think it is about time we start looking at the world around us and caring and preserving it for what it is.

Counterfeiters beware

Earlier this week in Manhattan a federal judge awarded Louis Vuitton more then $3.5 million due to the excessive amount of sales in counterfeit handbags. There are about three companies and many of these companies presidents that this suit was filed against. Although these companies are paying the price will other companies flee from this niche market? The smart person who thought about selling fake designer handbag to countless women who can’t afford the real thing, well maybe isn’t that smart. Next time you go to the city see if there are the same amounts of fake handbags throughout the city? Seriously I want to know?

cut it out !

“laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser programed by a computer to cut materials.
the material then either melts, burns, vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving an edge with a high quality surface finish.”

SPRING 2009 INSPIRATION, FEAST YOUR EYES ON THIS

laser cutting may be one of the new waves in fashion design, and we may start seeing a lot more of it [including some diy projects perhaps?!]. although it’s been around for quite awhile… spring 2009 had some great inspirational pieces using this technique. the cutting is so precise and the outcome is gorgeous creations. i think this style is so innovative and creates such a modern edge on garments.

while searching around i also found these goodies from spring 2002 line.
this is alberta ferretti’s junior line, philosophy

love love love the peek-a-boo laser cut skirts underneath, such a subtle but creative approach.

Not so merry merrry Christmas

I found this study done by The Conference Board at Apparel News that gives statistics about how they think this holiday season will do.

• U.S. households this season will spend an average of $418, down from $471
• Only 27% of households plan to spend more than $500 on holiday gifts
• People living in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin are expected to spend the most-about $550
• Online shopping- 39% of shoppers say they plan to do their holiday shopping online. The most common items to buy are books, followed by toys and games and then apparel and footwear.
• Households with people 65+ will spend $469 on gifts
• Households with people ages 35 to 44 will spend $419 on gifts
• Households with incomes $50,000+ will spend $551 on gifts

“This is shaping up to be one of the most challenging holiday seasons in years, and it’s going to take more than the usual discounts and incentives for retailers to get consumers to spend more freely,” —Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center.

first lady style

michelle obama has been making quite a stir in the fashion world. since we haven’t seen a stylish first lady since jackie kennedy, michelle’s outfits have gotten tounges wagging.

every first lady develops her signature style, barbara bush kept it matronly, hillary clinton stuck to pantsuits, and laura bush depended on oscar de la renta classics and carolina herrera. it was jacqueline kennedy that took america’s breath away. her grace and elegance shined through her clean cut, solid colored outfits. paired with over sized sunglasses, pearls and perfect feminine jackets
- her style was impeccable.

michelle obama is sincerely a women of our times. a modern mother who is sporting up to date fashions with perfect tailoring and feminine touches. she wears everything from designer to low cost designs like the flowered sundress she wore on “the view” that only cost $148 at white house/black market and the bright yellow j. crew ensemble she wore on “the tonight show”.

michelle always looks chic and perfectly put together in pieces by chicago designer maria pinto, like the one she wore when barrack claimed the democratic nomination- a sleeveless, purple sheath accessorized with large pearls.

on election night the future first lady wore a gorgeous red-and-black chiffon narciso rodriguez dress from the spring 2009 collection. it took a lot of confidence to pull this bold dress off and she did it with class and elegance.

no matter what she’s wearing michelle always looks perfectly put together.

could michelle o be the next jackie o?

i know one thing- this stylish first lady will keep fashion enthusiasts very happy for the next four years.

Now You Know: Steven Miesel

Steven Meisel is an American photographer, famous for his work in US and Italian Vogue. This man captures fashion in ways that are unthinkable; he defines fashion photography.

His fascination for beauty and models started at a young age. He studied at the High School of Art and Design [NYC] and Parsons School of Design [NYC] where he majored in fashion illustration.

One of Meisel’s first jobs was to work for fashion designer Halston as an illustrator. Meisel never thought he could become a photographer. Later on, while working at Women’s Wear Daily as an illustrator, he went to Elite model agency where two girls working there allowed him take pictures of some of their models. Some of these models took their pictures to Seventeen magazine to show their model books and the people at Seventeen subsequently called Meisel and asked if he wanted to work with them.Meisel currently works for many different fashion magazines, including fashion bibles such as US and Italian Vogue, amongst others. He has been the only photographer for Italian Vogue’s cover for almost 15 years.

Heaven on Earth?

… well, this seems pretty close!

The highly anticipated Dubai Mall has opened, unveiling the first phase of a new retail, fashion and entertainment mecca. Click here to check it out!
At 5.6 million square feet of retail space, the mall is considered the largest in the world. There are 1,200 stores plus 160 food and beverage outlets, and the mall is expected to attract 30 million visitors in its first year. The mall houses 10 mini-malls within the massive structure. These include a Gold Souk, designed to recreate a traditional Middle Eastern gold bazaar, and a designer-focused Fashion Avenue. Bloomingdale’s and Galeries Lafayette will anchor the 440,000-square-foot section dedicated to high street brands. Fashion Avenue has over 70 flagships, including Chanel, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Dior, Armani, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Roberto Cavalli, Hugo Boss, Loewe, Galliano, Givenchy, Cerruti, Missoni, Tom Ford, Escada, Ermenegildo Zegna, Pucci, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino and Salvatore Ferragamo.

Adding to the exclusivity of Fashion Avenue is a dedicated VIP valet entrance with onyx cladding, white marble flooring and an intricately designed glass ceiling. A special event facility is also part of the area.
Besides an array of shopping, the mall has a number of entertainment options. It hosts the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink; an indoor waterfall that drops four levels; KidZania, a children’s “edu-tainment” center; a SEGA Republic theme park, and a 22-screen cineplex, the largest in the region.

One of the mall’s most complex attractions is the Dubai Aquarium & Discovery Centre. Set in the center of the mall, visitors can enter a 270-degree walk-through tunnel to view over 33,000 aquatic creatures, including 400 sharks, the largest single school of sharks on earth. The aquarium holds 2.6 million gallons of salt water. A team of aquatic experts from Australia is managing the project.

The Dubai Mall, which also has an adjoining five-star hotel, The Address, is part of the Downtown Burj Dubai development.

Anything He’s Wearing…

…Is sure to be tastefully put together. And we like guys who are well dressed right ladies?!?! Shots have just surfaced featuring Ed Westwick, Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl for those of you non-watchers, wearing their classic white shoes. It sucks that the ads aren’t actually coming out until next year [how they torture us] but these previews are good enough for now. Hopefully holiday shopping will take your minds off it all.

P.S. - Is it just me or does he always look like impeccably dressed?

Oh NO!

Everyone loves Marc Jacobs.
His designs are hip and fresh and with his personal new look, he’s become eye-candy as well.

But this:

…is ridiculous!

So, I write:

Dear Mr. Jacobs,

As a dedicated customer and a woman who is in love with everything you make, I have recently come upon an item in your Spring 2009 that has made me uber concerned with your label. I’m going to write it off as a mistake by the media… who told everyone that this was your shoe. I’m not quite sure if you can sue for defaming your brand, because the Good Lord knoooowwwsss that this had to be a mistake. But don’t worry, I have rallied all my girls and we forgive you. We forgive you, the designers who work under you, the merchandisers who are attempting to sell this shit, the buyers of department stores who are stocking it on shelves and the little workers in the sweatshops who did not say “NO” when forced to make this atrocious shoe. We forgive you all. Just don’t let it happen again!

hugs&kisses,
jenelle
