My name is Misty, and I'm a senior in Fashion and Textile Technology. I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. I previously attended the University at Buffalo where I received a bachelor of arts in Political Science, May 2000. I recently decided to return to school for fashion after working in Public Radio Broadcasting in Buffalo and New York City. My story is a bit complicated due to the fact that I am a Merchie, but my goal is to do fashion journalism. I've completed internships at Seventeen Magazine, Buffalo Rising, and Rochester Insider. Since there isn't a concentration for fashion journalism, I decided to focus my efforts on merchandising. I'm also interested in Visual Merchandising and Fashion Styling. I look forward to interacting with my fellow fashion fanatics!

The summer Olympics are about to begin on 8-8-08 in Bejing and just like every Olympics, the whole world is sure to be watching the coverage. Everyone is usually so in-tuned to the athletes and who's managed to take home the gold. This year though, designers everywhere are scrambling to get their designs coverage. American sportswear brand, Ports 1961 has secured the corespondents on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, and the USA Network to wear their designs while cover the Bejing Olympics.

“When I was first approached to create a capsule collection for the NBC Olympic Commentators, I was honored,” said Tia Cibani, Creative Director of Ports 1961. “I can relate to their hectic work schedule and the necessity to have to have easy, modern, and accessible clothing that travels well. I took into consideration each woman’s personal sense of style and fused it with the classic Ports 1961 sensibility.”

It all started out as a series of books about wealthy high school students living on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

But then, last fall, the CW television network premiered the Gossip Girl show, which turned out remarkable ratings. Over night, this show became an instant hit. Viewers loved tuning in once a week to catch up on the social lives of queen bee Blair Waldorf, her best friend, Serena VanDerWoodsen, and all their friendshups in between.

Aside from the "good tv" aspect of the show, audiences get a glimspe of that "New-York-Style-Fashion" everyone constantly raves about. If you're not from Manhattan, and you're not exactly familiar with its' fashion scene, then this show gives those viewers who may not have been old enough to tune into Sex and the City, a closer look at the envious fashions of the New York City elite.

I know I've done a few entries on Sex and the City and while this is a fictional show and major box office hit, there's nothing fictional about the amazing fashion that is featured. Throughtout the Sex and the City movie, Carrie Bradshaw's assistant, played by Jennifer Hudson, is shown carrying a variety of designer purses. These purses, as she so proudly declared, were items that were borrowed off the infamou website Bag Borrow or Steal.

After doing a little research of my own, I got the scoop on this up and coming website made famous by Sex and the City. For a decent start up fee, a member of Bag Borrow or Steal can begin browsing the website that offers everything from jewelry, sunglasses and of course the coveted designer bags. After perusing each category, you may find something that you may want to "Borrow". For a small fee, you can then rent the item for a week or for a month, whichever pleases you. If after a week, you decide you can't live without your new found treasure, Bag Borrow or Steal offers an opportunity to "Steal" the item, for a fee of course :-)

I found this site incredibly interesting. While I don't think it would be financially do-able every week, I do find that "Borrowing" real Chanel earings or a vintage Gucci necklace for an occasion such as your own Wedding, would be an unbelievable opportunity.

Check out a few of my finds :-)

Remember that cute little cupcake purse Charlotte's daughter Lilly carried to Carrie's wedding? Well here it is to borrow!
Shopping for Labels or Love?

A few weeks ago, everyone’s favorite fashion mavens made their big screen debuts in what has been declared as one of this year’s biggest movie anticipations. Last fall, the ladies of Sex and the City, strutted their Manolo’s down the streets of Manhattan in designer ensembles that every woman in America yearned to re-create on her very own.

The paparazzi made sure of photographing the women, (Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha) every single day, with pictures splashed in celebrity magazines and in the daily Page Six column. These effortlessly put-together-ensembles, thanks to costume designer Patricia Fields, were pieced with authentic items from design houses such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Jimmy Choo, Gucci and Prada.

After seeing the movie myself, I’ve decided that I don’t need to max out my credit card just to be able to create some of the fabulous outfits worn by the girls. The first outfit I’ve decided to re-create was worn by Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie Bradshaw in the movie. Carrie is a free-lance columnist who writes about the trials and tribulations of a single girl looking for love in a big city. Along the way, we learn about her addiction to all things fashion, particularly Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahnicks.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for over a few months, then you’re currently aware of the current rising gas prices. With the price of oil soaring to almost $5.00 a gallon across the country, it’s caused many American’s to finally realize just how dependent we’ve become on oil. This in turn, has finally made Global Warming a realization instead of just a figment of Al Gore’s imagination.

Designers and retailers worldwide have taken this pro-earth stance and have created “eco-friendly” product lines ranging from soy candles, which are said to burn “cleaner” and 100% organic cotton clothing, which retailers often donate a percentage of the sale towards a charity or cause of their choice.

To browse and purchase soy candles check out:

GUESS is famously known for their racy and over the top ad campaigns, but have recently created their “GO GREEN” line that features Organic Cotton Tees and Organic Denim. They even promise a 10% donation to promote Environmental Awareness with every purchase.

5 Reasons You Know Summer Has Arrived

1)	8 p.m. is the new 3 p.m.
2)	Flip flops. Enough said.
3)	No more spray tans!!
4)	Mandatory pedicures
5)	Time for a new bathing suit

So, 1 through 4 leaves me with warm, fuzzy feelings about summer.

Number 5- Mehhh. Not so much.

If you’ve ever experienced that dreaded feeling of having to shop for a new bathing suit, then you know how difficult it is to find the perfect one. With so many styles, ranging from teeny tiny bikinis to effortless and simple one piece’s, it can easily become an overwhelming experience.

This summer though, designs are taking a new turn and becoming more sophisticated and mature. Gone are the days when “less is more”. Retailers are offering ultra feminine and girly designs that accentuate the female form instead of exposing it for every passerby on the beach.

Here in Buffalo, we have been teased by the weather lately. One day its miraculously ( and unseasonally) 70 degrees & sunny in late April, the next day its 40 degrees and hailing? Abrreviated soft silk, in the perfect shady green, a brilliant color for summer that you will see even more of in fall. I saw these fab shorts in Express the other day and completely fell in love! I have to say, the picture really does not do these shorts justice. The white and red are amazing, but, the black pair is what caught my eye! I love the combination of the black satin and the gold findings( must see in person!!). Ooo-ber luxe!!
Goin' downtown? These are the pefect pair of luxury shorts for every glamourous gal, that is if you can shell out $925.00 + tax! The shorts are made of beautiful Italian silvery tweed, and have a silk lining. For those of us who arent lucky enough to be millionaire socialites, we can only hope that the inspiration behind these shorts will trickle down to a more affordable version.

My very favorite shorts for this spring season are the Express High-waist Sexy Satin Shorts.
These shorts have the triple threat of being STYLISH, SLEEK & SEXY! Best of all , they retail for a mere $54.50!
The Sexy Satin fabric and High-waist silhouette, makes this pair of shorts versatile for a day to night outfit. As with their counter part, the Sexy Satin Editor Shorts, these are even more impressive in person!

One thing a popular store can do to increase sales and attract more customers is expanding their merchandise. That is what Victoria's Secret did. Victoria's Secret is known for their lingerie. But now, they have the Pink line, which is becoming even more popular. They also have clothes, shoes, perfume, and makeup now. This is working well for VS because they have loyal customers. Therefore, they will buy anything that is sold at VS. They sell merchandise that they know their customers will like. It is important for retailers to know their target customer and understand their wants and needs. And this is what Victoria's Secret does. Another good strategy that VS is doing is mailing out giftcards to their customers. This ensures that these customers will keep coming back to the stores to purchase more merchandise. I think Victoria's Secret is doing an excellent job in keeping their loyal customers satisfied and attracting new customers.

Online Shopping has becoming more and more popular. The numbers of online shoppers have been increasing every year. Personally, I think online shopping is a great and easy way to browse for merchandise and purchase them. In my experience, there is so much more merchandise and variety on the store's website than in the actual store. For example, when I was at a Forever21 store, I couldn't find anything that I liked. But, when I went to their website the next day, I found a lot of clothes that I really liked! So of course, I purchased the clothes on their online website. Also, one time my cousin went shopping at WetSeal to find a solid color babydoll tank top. She told me she couldn't find any there. They were all paisley patterned tops, which she does not like. I told her that I saw a bunch of plain babydoll tops on the WetSeal website.
So, if you can't find what you're looking for at the store, then I suggest you to try browsing on the store's website. Chances are they will have what you're looking for!

Online shopping can also be very helpful for college students. Buying textbooks at the book store can cost up to $500 or more! That is way too much money for books. But, at websites like Half.com, Valorebooks.com, and Amazon.com, students can buy their books at really low prices. I had to buy a text book for my history class and it cost around $70 at the book store. I went to valorebooks.com and found the book for only $3! That definitely was a good deal!

Celebrity Clothing Line

There is a new trend that is happening right now in retail stores. Celebrities are creating their own line of clothing that will sell in low price point stores. Avril Lavigne will have a line at Kohl's. Vera Wang has a line at Kohl's, as well. Madonna has a line at H&M. Sarah Jessica Parker has a clothing line at Steve & Barry's. Heidi Montag has a line at Anchor Blue. Ashlee Simpson created a line of t-shirts at WetSeal.

I think it is a good strategy for these well-known celebrities to sell their clothing lines at these types of stores because these retail stores sell to the masses. Therefore, these clothes can be available to everyone regardless of their income. Also, fans of these celebrities will most likely buy their clothes. Therefore, the stores can attreact new customers and sales will increase.

I Have never bought anything from Steve & Barry's before, I've seen Sarah Jessica Parker's clothing line on the website, and I really liked it! Also, the price for everything is $8.98! Great fashionable clothes at a low price is always a good deal! So now, I'm thinking about buying something at Steve & Barry's. As a result, they just gained a new customer!

If these celebrity clothing lines sell well, then I'm sure more and more celebrities will start creating their own clothing line, too.

We all know that accessories are a great way to update an outfit. Accessories are also a good way to purchase a little pieces of designer luxury if you aren't the average millionaire who can afford it all. I'm a firm believer in mixing it up! You can rock a $20.00 H&M shirt, cute vintage jeans you scored at a garage sale, perhaps a pair of timeless summertime shoes you found in your closet, add a limited edition Coach handbag and bam...a unique chic style with a trendy touch. I found 5 HAUTE accessories just in time for spring!

1.) COACH ERGO PATENT LEATHER PLEATED FRAMED SATCHEL $398.00-$498.00

This bag is fabulous, and sure to be a Coach sell out! Not only does it come in eye popping colors like Pink, Navy ( in patent) and Vermillion ( regular leather), it also comes in more neutral colors like tan, white, black and signature fabric. ( Check out the above link for even more options!) The inside framed clasp closure is a lovely and functional touch. I love the addition of the pleating on the outside, and the pretty tattersal print lining! Priced just under $500.00, this is one affordable luxury bag that will last for many summers to come!

2.)Louis Vuitton Inclusion Ring- $225.00

When I first saw this ring, I instantly began reminiscing of middle school in the late 90's, when resin and plastic bubble looking rings were a must have. I also feel a very 70's flower child vibe, that makes me giddy for summer! This fun resin based ring mixes golden brassed LV monograms with swarovski crystals and comes in fun & flirty colors ( pink, parme, framboise, jaune, pomme d'amore). You can also pair this ring with the Louis Vuitton Inclusion bracelets in small and large.

3.)Dior Escrime Sunglasses-$350.00

Love these shades!! The over sized rimless tinted frames are paired with polished metal and resin arms with cut out detail and a Dior logo. Color choices are black and brown and the lenses are 100% UV protected. The Dior Escrime Sunglasses are a fierce way to protect your eyes during summer's sunny days!

4.) COACH Spring Floral Scarf- $68.00

Tie it on a handbag, in your hair, around your head, put it around your neck or even tie it as a belt! Scarfs are a versatile way to add flavor to any outfit. COACH's new Spring Floral Scarf is made of 100% imported silk. The signature pattern is layered with a beautiful floral print that looks as though it was hand painted on the scarf. Absolutely stunning, and affordable!

5.) Just Cavalli Silver Charm Necklace-$223.00

Turquoise & Silver jewelry is great for the summer months. Add that color combo to a tribal inspired charm necklace and you have this fantastic piece of jewelry from Just Cavali! The link chain necklace is made of polished silver tone brass and enamel , with an adjustable lobster clasp with charms that include: an engraved palm, logo, snakeskin-textured heart, cross and peace sign, enameled fang and fist, and turquoise beads.
